Bio-based Ectoine

Ectoine is used as an active ingredient in skincare and sun protection products among others. It stabilizes proteins and other cellular structures and protects the skin from stresses like UV irradiation and dryness. Activatec is developing a process to produce it more sustainably from alternative feedstocks.

Bio-based Lactobionic Acid

Lactobionic acid is used in the cosmetics industry as an antioxidant and in the pharmaceutical industry as an excipient for formulation. Activatec is collaborating to produce it directly from whey.

Highly-purified GOS

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) belong to the group of prebiotics. Prebiotics stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria in the colon. GOS occurs in commercially available products such as food for both infants and adults. Activatec is developing a technology to get it highly-purified free of lactose and other sugars.

Halo-free PHAs

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) comprise a group of natural biodegradable polyesters that are synthesized by microorganisms. In the industrial production of PHA, the polyester is extracted and purified from the bacteria using hazardous chemicals such as chloroform. Activatec has developed a greener and safer process to get high-purity PHAs.
